Course Description:


This Neuro-microscopicalcourse takes place from 13th to 15th of May, 2016 at Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran. The course is a general and intense 3-day learning experience with a mixture of lectures and hands on exercises during the day. In the breaks and evenings, participants have ample opportunity to discuss their individual projects with the instructors. 

Thiscoursecovers a wide variety of topics including design-unbiased quantification of biological structure using contemporary stereological techniques, introduction to basic and advanced light microscopy, fluorescence techniques, laser scanning confocal microscopy, two-photon microscopy,super resolution microscopy, (focused ion beam scanning) electron microscopy and techniques for making tissue transparent (iDISCO/CLARITY). Moreover, this course is designed to teach all relevant aspects of stereology to provide biomedical researchers with design-unbiased quantification of measurements of 3-D biological structure. Topics covered:1) The estimation of volume, surface area, length, shape, spatial distribution, tensors, number and connectivity (disector/fractionator) in 3-dimensional space; 2) The measurement of these structural parameters in homogeneous and non-homogeneous tissues; 3) The design of efficient, unbiased sampling strategies; 4) Plane of sectioning; 5) How to determine the optimal number of animals per group and measurements per animals; 6) projection and shrinkage issues and their correction. 

The main aim of exercises is to show how to apply stereological methods on the 2D biological sections by working on the images from the tissue sections. For instance, in the exercises related to the Cavalieri estimator for measuring the volume of structure, students will do the practice on the pictures from human hippocampus.
